The Messenger Project: Music as the Medium of Engagement
April 22 - May 3, 2008

THE MESSENGER STORY

Engagement … cultural, social, political … a unique confluence of geography, history and artistry that embodies a country’s coming of age. Born in the United States of one country’s diaspora, the Messenger Project carries a resonance across all cultures. 21st century Ireland - a peaceful country of confidence, cultural sophistication and international vibrancy - has found a metaphor in this music.

I’m from County Down and founded Camerata Pacifica in 1990. Last year I commissioned The Messenger Concerto from the Belfast composer Ian Wilson for the Cork-born Catherine Leonard, who is the Camerata’s Principal Violinist. From half a world away, the three of us have been brought together by, and in pursuit of, music – and now this music is taking us back home. It’s a chance encounter that has engaged us with governments, agencies and individuals across the United States, Ireland and Britain. And it’s replete with the symbolism of hope as we begin with a performance in the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, and conclude our journey together at the Anglican Cathedral Church of St. Anne in Belfast.

Camerata Pacifica, an American ensemble, is an international collective whose artists’ combined talents transcend any nationality. The Messenger Project is a celebration of music and its powers of engagement, inclusion, communication and community.

I invite you to be part of it.

Adrian Spence
Founder/Artistic Director, Camerata Pacifica
